Wensleydale Rail - Authentic Travel Experience

Wensleydale Rail – Authentic Travel Experience

These are exciting times on the wensleydalerail line running from Leeming Bar to Redmire!

Part of the resurgent 150+ Heritage Railway Sector in the UK,  twensleydalerail have preserved 22 miles of the former line from Northallerton to Garsdale that opened to passengers in full in 1878. Timetabled services run from Leeming Bar to Redmire (for Bolton Castle) and back, and they are actively working to restore the full length of the line as part of our historic rail and transport experience.

Leyburn Station is a particular focus of attention. Richmondshire District Council has awarded an Economic Growth Fund Grant towards the installation of a passing loop and supporting infrastructure.

The project will see the installation of a viewing platform and footbridge to the existing platform, signalbox with period signalling, water tower and cranes to service steam locomotives and a passing loop to allow engines to run around trains.

Some elements of the scheme are already complete, see here, and fundraising to secure and erect the footbridge are well underway.

During the Leyburn 1940s weekend the Leyburn Station becomes an important part of the authentic 1940s experience – and this year is no exception.

Here’s what Wenslydale Railway  have to say about what’s planned:

Join us on Saturday 21st July for an evacuee experience on The Wensleydale Railway in partnership with Leyburn 1940s weekend!

Families will join the train at Leeming Bar Station where it will depart at 9.45am and journey up to the Yorkshire Dales. The train will then return to Leyburn where guests can depart and enjoy the 1940s Festival in Leyburn centre. The journey will take approx. 90mins.

Once on-board there will be a range of activities for children and adults can get involved too. These will include making a gas mask and ration cards, we will also have a range of characters on board to bring the evacuee experience alive as well as a real life evacuee that can talk to guests about what it was like to be evacuated from Newcastle to the countryside during WWII. We will be making a stop along the way to pick up a special guest for a jolly 1940s sing along. Guests will also be provided with a small snack and a drink.
